Map showing Geology, Oil and Gas Fields, and Geologic Provinces
of South Asia
Edition: first
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: map
Series_Information:
Series_Name: World Energy Data on CD-ROM
Issue_Identification: Open File Report 97-470C
Publication_Information:
Publication_Place: Denver,Colorado
Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey
Description:
Abstract:
The geology data set for this map includes arcs, polygons, and
labels that outline and describe the general geologic age and
rock type for South Asia. The geologic provinces data set
includes arcs, polygons, and labels of geologic and petroleum
provinces interpreted and designated by Ben E. Law and Craig J.
Wandrey from a number of literature and map resources to assist
in the assessment of oil and gas resources for the U.S.G.S.
World Energy Project. The oil and gas field centerpoints data
set is a point coverage that marks the approximate centerpoints
of oil and gas fields in South Asia. Political boundaries are
provided to show the general location of country and/or other
reference 'political' boundaries.
Purpose:
The data provide government, geological community, consultants, and
the general public with the important geological base that is used
to define geologic provinces and oil and gas field assignments for
U.S.G.S. Oil and Gas Assessment of the World.
Supplemental_Information:
There are several data sets divided into directories on the CD-ROM:
**********************************************************************
1. ARC_COVR directory
This directory contains original UNIX ARC/INFO(ver. 7.0.4) coverages
in Albers Conic Equal Area projection. This directory also contains
several text files, look-up tables, and ARC Macro-language command
files in ARC/INFO INTERCHANGE format, from which one can produce a
complete Map plot at a scale of 1:5,000,000 for South Asia using
the reg8glg.aml program.
1.1 geo8 - Generalized surficial geology of South Asia.
Item 'GLG' in coverage's feature attribute table.
1.2 provwrld - Geological province boundaries for the world that
outline areas of common geologic structures or petroleum systems.
Items 'CODE' and 'NAME' are included in the coverage's
feature attribute table. Note that this coverage is for the entire world
and that the mapextent clip command was used in the aml reg8glg.aml
to limit the extent of the cover that is displayed.
1.3 fld8 - Oil and Gas Field Centerpoints for South Asia.
This point coverage is a general representation of the number,
distribution, and location of oil and gas fields. This data set
is part of a proprietary database. The field center points are
displayed only on the plot. The field data used is available
from Petroconsultants International Data Corporation. This cover
can not be released to the public and is not included.
1.4 pol8 - U.S.G.S. region boundary between Region 8 (South
Asia), Region 2 on the west (Middle East-North Africa), Region 1 on
the northwest (Former Soviet Union), and Region 3 (East Asia).
These are four of the eight regional subdivisions in the
U.S.G.S. Oil and Gas assessment of the World. Country boundaries
included are provided for reference only and are used with
permission from ESRI.
1.5 polw_rb - World coverage in Robinson Projection for use with
the supplementary wldmap.aml which draws a reference map in the
upper-right corner.
1.6 reg8 - USGS Region 8 boundary coverage in Robinson Proj.
for use with the supplementary wldmap.aml, to display a reference
map of Region 8.
1.7 proj.prj - text file that contains the projection information
necessary for the neatline tics.
1.8 neat.prj - text file that contains the projection information
for the neatline placement.
1.9 mapbar.aml - AML file produced by W.R. Beeman for the
generation of a scalebar at a scale that is specified by the user,
in this case, 1:5,000,000.
1.10 reg8glg.aml - AML file produced by C.J. Wandrey for the
generation of the "Map Showing Geology, Oil and Gas Fields, and
Geologic Provinces of South Asia".
1.11 reg8prov.aml - AML file produced by C.J. Wandrey for the
generation of the reference map showing geologic province, region,
field center points, and political boundaries for South Asia.
1.12 wldmap.aml - AML file produced by A.S. Karshbaum for the
generation of a reference map of the World with a Region 8
boundary in red.
1.13 reg8intr.txt - text file that contains the map's introductory
text.
1.14 reg8refs.txt - text file containing a list of selected
references used to produce and verify the map.
1.16 wep.shd - a World Energy Project shadeset produced by Chris
Schenck for shading the geologic polygons.
1.17 fnt034 - a pattern necessary for use with wep.shd shadeset.
1.18 geology.key - key file for shading, text, and labels for
the geology. (IMPORT auto geology.e00 geology.key)
1.18 provmap.key - key file for shading for other regions.
1.19 lines.key - key file for all line types.
(IMPORT auto lines.e00 lines.key)
1.20 fieldmrk.key - key file for the oil and gas field centerpoints.
(IMPORT auto fieldmrk.e00 fieldmrk.key)
1.21 provline.key - key file used in reg8prov.aml
**********************************************************************
2. EXPORT/UNIX directory

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Overall accuracy of both the geology and geologic province
data sets is based on the accuracy of the general geology
coverage. Original maps are traced onto mylar and scanned at
a resolution of 300 dpi. The scanned images are converted
to Arc GRIDs and then to Arc coverages in Albers Conic Equal
Area projection.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The data set is a collection of ARC/INFO coverages that are
topologically consistent. The fuzzy tolerance has been consistent
through each processing step. A color plot at 1:10,000,000 scale
was visually compared to the original map at 1:10,000,000 scale and
any detected errors were corrected in ARC/INFO.
Completeness_Report:
Generalizations on geology are made from original UNESCO
1:10,000,000 and UNESCO 1:5,000,000 scale Geologic maps. Several
geological age subdivisions from the source maps are combined into
single units. Although most polygons from the source map are
included in the data set, the geology is simplified and attributed
by overall age and lithologic group.

Process_Description:
Mylar is placed over the source map and geology polygons and inland
water bodies are traced using a 00 rapidiograph pen. Latitude and
longitude tics are carefully transferred from the source map to the
mylar tracing and recorded. The mylar tracing is then scanned on
a large-scale Anatech scanner at a resolution of 300 dpi. to create
a TIFF image. The scanned TIFF image is then transferred to ARC/INFO,
converted to a Arc GRID file, then to a Arc Vector coverage, and transformed
to Albers Conic Equal Area projection. The geological attributes
are assigned to each polygon in ARCEDIT, using a modified or
abbreviated geologic character designation standardized by the USGS
World Energy Project.

geographic, structural, and/or petroleum system characteristics.
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source:
The geologic province data set is produced from the
interpretation and combination of several resources,
including the geology, the distribution of oil
and gas fields, structural geology, and geography.
Numerous sources of geologic information are used for
the final interpretation and designation of these provinces
by C. J. Wandrey.
Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The geologic provinces data set contains AREA, PERIMETER, -ID, CODE,
PNUM, and NAME. AREA, PERIMETER, and -ID are calculated internally
by ARC/INFO. The "NAME" of the geologic province is indicative
of the geologic, geographic, structural, and/or petroleum
characteristics for which it was named.
Entity_and_Attribute_Detail_Citation:
A more in-depth discussion of the geologic province NAMEs and their
relative ranking in terms of total known petroleum volume is given
in the USGS Open File Report 97-463.
